The 900-year-old Tower of London which has faced assaults from Nazi bombers, renegade barons, and rampaging peasants but has stood undaunted is once again under threat from the neighboring skyscrapers.
UNESCO’s World Heritage Committee thinks now of adding this one of Britain’s top tourists attractions to the list of endangered world heritage sites as the skyscrapers threaten the view of this beautiful fortress.
This building was built by William the Conqueror in the late 11th century as a symbol of royal authority meant to inspire awe in rebellion-minded Londoners and would-be invaders. This 90 foot tall stone building dominated the panorama of the city at a time. But now it is overrun by travelers and hemmed in by a noisy highway, this tower no longer dominates the area as it did earlier.
The world’s top cultural body is worried about its existence and has warned that further constructions would deteriorate the site and the body will issue its verdict after its meeting in New Zealand on Saturday.

Venice has a cultural history that is being increasingly deteriorated by the tourists and this history needs to be preserved. The onus for this arduous task rests in the hands of the tourists themselves.
The above picture displays the tourists crowded at St. Mark’s Square in Venice. A message to the visitors: No bare torsos in St. Mark’s Square. No lounging on the monuments. And no feet dangling in the canals.
Every year the travel industry is ameliorating its profits while the Venetian culture has to suffer. The tourists wreak the most havoc on Venice’s delicate ecology and architecture while there is no help to least neutralize their impact.
Henry James avers: “Though there are some disagreeable things in Venice there is nothing so disagreeable as the visitors.”
Augusto Salvadori, the city official in charge of public conduct has launched a campaign to exhort the visitors to preserve the precious culture of this beautiful land and to treat the city in a manner befitting its stature. Pierluigi Sacco, a professor of design at Venice’s University IUAV has been trying to preserve the culture of Italy and thinks to raise cultural offerings to heighten tourists’ commitment to the city. This would be the best way in this direction.
It is a request to the visitors to treat the historical monuments of the city with veneration and to avoid deteriorating them by writing something on them for others or by turning them into picnic spots.
