Most Cruised Waterways

Here are some of the most cruised waterways; in fact these must be called the rivers that deliver.

Russian Waterways

Any one who wants to plunge in the history of Russia would definitely go for a cruise. Viking River Cruises has a 14-night voyage down the Dnieper from Kiev to the Black Sea and back, with visits to Odessa, Yalta and Sevastopol. More popular with cruise lines and passengers, however, is the 400-mile journey from Moscow to St Petersburg, or vice versa; this takes in the Moscow Canal, a stretch of the Volga, the Volga-Baltic Waterway and part of the Svir River, crossing huge lakes that barely merit a mention in a vast country that spans 11 time zones.

Most Cruised Waterways

All rivers here are just overwhelming and interesting. Top stops include Yaroslavl, to visit the Church of Elijah the Prophet, and Gulch, where Ivan the Terrible’s son Dimitry was murdered (the cheerily named Church of St Dimitry-on-the-Blood was built on the spot where his body was found). Titan HiTours (0845 375 0175, www.titanhitours.co.uk) offers a 12-night “Russia’s Royal Riverways” cruise from Moscow to St Petersburg on the 220-passenger Litvinov, including three days in St Petersburg and two in Moscow; from £2,165 per person including flights and transfers in both Russia and the UK.

The Danube

It is one of Europe’s most-cruised waterways. There are many companies which deliver services of facilitating you with the cruises offering you a view of various regions that were once hidden away behind the Iron Curtain, such as Novi Sad and Belgrade in Serbia, and Veliko Tarnovo, the medieval capital of Bulgaria.
Peter Deilmann River Cruises (0845 310 4400, www.deilmann.co.uk) offers a 12-night cruise from Tulcea in Romania to Passau in Germany on the 96-passenger Casanova; from £2,360 per person including flights and transfers.

The Ayeyarwady, Myanmar

One of the major attractions of Myanmar is the beauty of this river. It gives an exotic feeling and is just amazingly lovely. Many people donor visit it because of controversies around it but it is too fascinating.
If time and money are on your side, there is an occasional 11-night cruise north from Mandalay to Bhamo, 50 miles from the border with China, with excursions including a train ride into the jungle and a visit to the old market town of Katha; there are also seven-night cruises from Mandalay to Bagan and back, and even three- and four-night itineraries (Mandalay to Bagan or vice-versa) for those who just want a taste.

• Hotel in Yangon with four nights’ full board on the Road to Mandalay; from £2,245 per person, including flights and transfers. Audley Travel (01993 838105, www.audleytravel.com) offers an eight-day Myanmar package combining three nights’ bed and breakfast at the Governor’s Residence

These are some of the rivers that caught my attention and I thought that I must acquaint you with the beauty and fascination of these most-cruised rivers. Share your experiences if you too have cruised on these or some other rivers.
